August 21, 2010 - A 27-year-old Indio, California man was electrocuted on August 19 in Palm Desert while performing his job duties as a pool man at a Southern California country club. According to officials from the Riverside County Sheriff's Department and fire investigators, the man was working on the pool at The Lakes Country Club when exposed wires from an extension cord touched the pool's metal handrail while the man was working near the pool steps. Deputies and paramedics tried to revive the man at the scene but he was declared dead on arrival at a Rancho Mirage hospital. Investigators from the California Occupational Safety and Health Administration are investigating the incident. The man has not been identified pending notification of his family. Electricity travels through conductors. A conductor is any material that will allow electricity to flow. Electricity always tries to reach the ground. People make good conductors so if you get in the way of the electricity it could go right through you. Make sure that the electrical cords you have in use are in good condition. Look for slices in the protective covering or signs of fraying, cracking or other wear and tear. If you see any exposed wires or potential for exposed wires you should stop using the appliance, tool or other electrical device immediately. You should never staple or nail an electrical cord to anything. Make sure you don't place furniture or other heavy objects on your electrical cords. You should avoid placing electrical cords in walkways or other high traffic areas. And, don't put your cords under carpets or rugs or other floor coverings. Please remember that you should take good care of your electrical cords and thoroughly inspect them for damage. If you or a loved one have suffered personal injuries or a wrongful death as a result of electrocution, you should call a trusted Sonoma County Personal Injury attorney for a free consultation.
