August 13, 2010 - A California family of four was killed in a head-on collision near Glenns Ferry, Idaho at around 8:49 p.m. last night. A 45-year-old man drove his 2001 Ford F-150 pickup truck eastbound in the westbound lanes of Highway 184 and struck a 2010 Mazda sedan head-on. The Mazda was driven by a 48-year-old man from El Monte, California. The passengers inside the Mazda included two females, a 48-year-old and an 18-year-old, and a 9-year-old male. The occupants of the Mazda were all related, but authorities had not yet determined their exact relationships. All of the family members were killed immediately upon impact. The pickup and the Mazda rolled over after the collision. The pickup driver was transported via air to a Boise, Idaho hospital. He was being treated for non-life-threatening injuries. The family members in the Mazda were all wearing seat belts. Police did not know if the pickup driver was using his seat belt at the time of the accident. An arrest warrant was issued for the pickup driver. He is being charged with four counts of felony vehicular manslaughter. (Vehicular manslaughter charges usually occur when a driver operates a vehicle in a reckless or unsafe manner that results in the death of another person. The driver does not necessarily need to be intoxicated to be charged with vehicular manslaughter. But, the driver must have been driving illegally in some manner such as speeding, reckless driving or under the influence of drugs.) According to police officials, alcohol was a factor in this tragic car accident. However, the driver's blood-alcohol level has not yet been determined. The driver will be taken into custody as soon as he is medically stable. He will be held in Elmore County Jail at least until his arraignment. His bond is set at $250,000.
