August 30, 2010 - A 29-year-old Santa Rosa man was killed in a motorcycle accident at about 10:40 a.m. today near Coddingtown Mall. According to Santa Rosa police, the motorcyclist was traveling east on West Steele Lane as he approached the intersection with Range Avenue. At the same time, a 71-year-old Santa Rosa man was headed west on Steele Lane in a Toyota Prius and began to turn left onto southbound Range Avenue. Witnesses said the traffic signal was green for both drivers as they approached the intersection from opposite directions. The motorcyclist collided with the right side of the Toyota Prius. The crash is still under investigation while officers attempt to determine who was at fault. The accident occurred at a very busy intersection. Therefore, it is likely that there were many witnesses to the collision. It is even possible that video exists of the crash from intersection cameras and/or security cameras from nearby businesses. When a fatality is involved, investigators will perform a thorough and complete investigation. Police said the motorcyclist was a local electric motorcycle entrepreneur. He was the President of Electric Race Bikes in Santa Rosa. The company focused on providing "quality high performance electric parts for racing and street motorcycle applications at the lowest possible prices." They were also a "custom shop" that could outfit combustion motorcycles with an electric motor package. The company Web site says that electric motorcycles are a great way for the "earth conscious" person to get around and that they ride smoother and quieter than combustion motorcycles. Police didn't say whether or not the motorcyclist was riding an electric motorcycle at the time of this tragic accident.
