Single Vehicle Rollover Accident - Highway 101

July 2, 2012 - According to California Highway Patrol reports, a 33-year-old man from Rohnert Park died in a motor vehicle accident on Sunday morning, July 1. The accident occurred on northbound U.S. Highway 101 near the Sonoma-Marin county line. At approximately 7:45 a.m., while traveling alone, the man rolled his 1993 Honda Civic hatchback when he lost control after drifting into the soft median of the highway. The CHP is currently investigating the accident. Officers believe that the Rohnert Park man may have been returning home from work. The investigating officers think the man might have fallen asleep when he drove into the center divider. Officers believe he may have overcorrected once he realized what happened because the Honda then crossed the northbound lanes before slamming through a guardrail on the other side of the highway. The vehicle was found in a dirt ditch beyond the guardrail. The driver was wearing a seat belt, but that was not enough to save him in this horrible crash. The Highway Patrol reported that alcohol was not a factor. The victim's name has not been released because investigators are still trying to locate his family. The exact cause of this fatal crash may never be determined. In any event, if you are tired, sleepy or fatigued in any way, you do not belong behind the wheel of a motor vehicle. Drowsy driving is probably something almost all drivers have experienced at one time or another. The facts show just how dangerous this is: From 1993 to 2003, according to statistics compiled by the California Highway Patrol, 41,288 people were injured in car accidents involving a drowsy driver on California roadways and approximately 1000 people were killed. Further, the United States National Highway Traffic SafetyAdministration (NHTSA) estimates that approximately 100,000 police-reported crashes occur annually in the United States involving drowsiness or fatigue as a principal causal factor and at least 71,000 people are injured in fall-asleep crashes every year. It is better to get off the road than to try to keep yourself awake while driving.
