Two Bicyclists Seriously Injured in Collision

October 11, 2012 - At approximately 12:40 p.m. on Monday, a 69-year-old Napa man struck and seriously injured two persons in a motor vehicle versus bicycle accident while traveling southbound on Highway 29 near St. Helena, California. The Napa man was driving a 2001 Pontiac at the time of the midday collision. The Pontiac apparently swerved into the bicyclists. Police are still trying to determine why the vehicle swerved. The cyclists were traveling with two other members of the Sonoma Valley Newcomers Club at the time of the accident. The group was in the midst of a regularly scheduled 20-25 mile bike ride when the two victims were struck. According to California Highway Patrol officers, they had ridden from St. Helena to Calistoga, where they had lunch, and were on their way back to St. Helena riding along the shoulder of Highway 29 near Ehlers Lane when they were struck. The Pontiac hit a 67-year-old woman first. She was thrown from her bike and possibly struck a utility pole. The woman suffered massive internal injuries and mulitple broken bones. The Pontiac then hit a 72-year-old woman who was taken to a local hospital with no memory of the crash. Her injuries included a broken scapula and cuts and bruises. Then 67-year-old woman remained in intensive care while the 72-year-old woman was able to be released from the hospital. She is now attempting to recover at home. So far, investigating officers have ruled out alcohol or any medical conditions as a cause of the crash. The accident is still under investigation. UPDATE: According to the Napa County Sheriff's Department, the driver of the Pontiac was found dead in his driveway the day following the accident. The 69-year-old man was found by his landlord after having collapsed in the driveway at approximately 1:50 p.m. on Tuesday.
